The HEIC problem, explained

Since 2017, every iPhone saves photos as HEIC by default. Apple did this for a good reason — HEIC files are about 50% smaller than JPEG at the same quality, which saves storage on your phone.

The problem starts when you try to use those photos anywhere else. Emailing a HEIC to a Windows user? They can't open it. Uploading to WordPress or Shopify? Rejected. Sending to a print service? Not supported.

JPG is the universal format that works everywhere — every browser, every operating system, every app. This tool converts your HEIC photos to JPG while keeping the quality you'd expect from the original.

HEIC

Smaller files, better quality. But only works reliably on Apple devices and newer Android phones.

JPG

Works literally everywhere. Every browser, every OS, every image editor since 1992.

Stop HEIC at the source

On your iPhone: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. New photos will save as JPG. Downside: photos take up ~2x more storage on your phone.

Common questions

What is HEIC and why does my iPhone use it?
HEIC is Apple's photo format since iOS 11 (2017). It saves about 50% storage compared to JPEG at the same quality. The catch: most non-Apple software can't open it.
Will the conversion lose quality?
At 80% quality (default), the difference is invisible. The JPG will be larger than the original HEIC — that's normal since HEIC compresses better. For critical work, use 95%+.
Why can't Windows open HEIC files?
HEIC uses the HEVC codec, which requires licensing fees. Microsoft charges $0.99 for the extension in the Microsoft Store. Converting to JPG is free and works with every Windows app.
Can I switch my iPhone to save as JPG?
Yes. Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. New photos save as JPG. Trade-off: about 2x more storage per photo. For existing HEIC photos, just convert them here.
